a night on the smutts

Just back from a week over on the lincs coast, this being the first time we’ve been over this year.. hoping we’d get a few sessions on the smutts
s/w wind and settled weather gave perfect conditions, hopefully this would hold out for the rest of the week as the tides were massive for the first part of the week and was going to make fishing difficult... which proved to be the case.

So an all-nighter was planned for Wednesday, only for the forecast of heavy rain to change our plans yet again
With a stiff southerly wind forecast for Friday, Thursday was looking to be the only chance of finding a few smoothhounds.

Decided against the chapel marks due to the sediment on the water, and headed further up the coast.
Huttoft being the chosen venue, we got there for 9:00pm and got settled down for an all-nighter, with the conditions prefect we were hopeful of seeing a few hounds on the beach tonight

2 hours before h/w out went the first baits... peeler on 2/0 pulley rigs, didn't have to wait to long before the rod went over and this nice starry was on the beach 8lb 1oz

then one for my dad at 6lb 12oz

i managed 2 more in the next half hour 6lb 15oz and this new pb 9lb 5oz



That was it then no more for the next 3 hours, then we was greeted by this lovely dawn
soon after we managed 3 more 2 for paul 4lb 8oz - 5lb 9oz and 1 for me 7lb 15oz all starry’s







another session Friday night over h/w again was looking good for a few more hounds until the wind swung round to the south which lifted the sea, hopes of any hounds were now dulled but looked good for a few bass at daybreak but wasn't to be... just 3 flounders between us, called it a day at first light as we had to be off the site by 10:00am.




Not as much fishing done as hoped for but at least we got amongst the smutts in the end, at one point it was looking like we were going to miss out this year been a very poor year up to yet compared to previous years... very hit and miss, think we’ll be making an earlier start next year.

Fantastic report and pics m8 and as usual your dad put you right on the fish i think out of all the times i went with you and your dad i blanked once i will really miss our sessions together and would like to thank you both for the memories

great report and well done for sticking at it. we've been over twice and missed them so we've decided to sack it this year.

it's been a bit hit and miss this year joe due to the weather, the problem is over this side including the north east you've got to have the conditions right, this last week it's been fishing it's head off and on the holderness as the weather has been settled.
we usually start targeting them at the beginning of july but not bothered as the wind as been all over the place up until last week, it's just a matter of keeping an eye on the weather (not the reports) and knowing when to go.
think we'll be starting a bit earlier next year after them big females.
