Some high winds have descended upon central Florida and are forecast to remain with us for much of the coming week. The wind has made sight fishing difficult but we have managed to catch some nice redfish and seatrout despite the challenging conditions. Water levels are still quite high but the temperature has dropped significantly with yesterday morning's water at 66 degrees. If conditions allow you to find the fish, they have been biting.

Last week, prior to the arrival of the cooler ...

The fishing in Mosquito Lagoon so far this month has been challenging. The water is high and, in many places, cloudy making sight fishing difficult. On the positive side, the weather has remained unseasonably warm. This has kept the tarpon around as well as the large schools of baitfish. When you can find the redfish, they are willing to eat and I saw many tailing fish during the past couple weeks.

Recent trips have resulted in varying levels of success. Last week, I fished with Duncan and ...

With the water level having risen over a foot during the past several weeks, the redfish have plenty of areas to visit that were inaccessible during the summer. Many of the large redfish have moved to the deeper basins for their spawn. When you can find the reds on the flats, however, they have been willing to eat a variety of lures. Much of my time the past couple weeks has been dedicated to chasing tarpon. You can find at least a few every day and some days they are quite plentiful. I have ...

Late August and September are typically the slowest months for the charter fishing business in this area. This gives me plenty of time to fish during what is one of my favorite times of year. That is exactly what I have been doing the past couple weeks. Variety is the name of the game and it is often fun to see how many different types you can catch in a day. Tarpon, however, are my main target and I spend most mornings targeting them. While they are fun to catch, they can certainly be frustrating. ...

The past two weeks have offered some very good fishing opportunities except for a few days of windy weather caused by a passing tropical front. Nearly every day brings legitimate chances to catch multiple species such as redfish, black drum, seatrout, tarpon, snook, and jack crevalle.

Last Monday, Jim and his son-in-law Brian drove up from Melbourne to target large redfish in Mosquito Lagoon. Prior to spotting reds, we encountered a large school of black drum and Brian landed one before ...

After a two week break to do some fishing with my wife out of town, I returned to Mosquito Lagoon this week to discover the water level had dropped nearly a foot. This was not a bad thing, though, as the fish have less places to go and were plentiful and easy to find. The vacation was great with daily catches of tarpon and snook with some snapper, flounder, and jacks mixed in.

Nearly all of the fish we caught were on the DOA holographic shrimp with a few coming on the Terror Eyz. ...

Fishing in Mosquito Lagoon has been very good the past couple weeks with plenty of large redfish along with trout, big ladyfish, voracious bluefish, and tarpon.

Sunday the 14th, New Jersey anglers Eric and Tom had shots at full grown redfish before the sun even broke the horizon. Before long, the fish took off for deeper water and we moved up shallow to look for tailing reds. Throughout the first few hours of the day, we consistently encountered singles and small pods of reds cruising the ...

With the summer pattern settling in of mostly calm mornings with late afternoon storms, we are entering my favorite time of year to fish in Florida. While the winter offers great redfish and trout fishing, the summer does as well along with a variety of other species we don't have during the colder months. Big tarpon have made an early season appearance in the Lagoon. We have not hooked any yet but it is an encouraging sign to see them this early. It should only get better as the summer goes ...

The Mosquito Lagoon has come alive in the past couple weeks and bait is everywhere. Water temperatures have been reaching the mid 80's during the day as we have been enjoying plenty of sun.

Last week, I took advantage of the warm weather and made my first tarpon trip of the year. I headed south about 100 miles and was pleased to see hundreds of tarpon rolling throughout the day. Unfortunately, they had no interest in eating and I did not catch one the entire day. I did land a couple small ...

While the fishing has remained very good, the winds of March arrived the past two weeks. Unfortunately, there have been plenty of clouds around as well making sight fishing difficult. Water levels have risen over a foot opening up new feeding grounds for the fish. The redfish, in particular, have been taking advantage of the new food source and are still schooling and tailing aggressively.

On a cloudy and windy day last week, my wife and I fished the Mosquito Lagoon. We started the day ...

Big schools of redfish are prowling the flats of Mosquito Lagoons and have been tailing and feeding hard all week.
With very low water levels in the Mosquito Lagoon, the redfish have less areas to roam making them easier to find, on most days. Tailing and finning reds have been plentiful. Persistent clouds and haze have been presenting a problem for the past couple weeks. When the fish have not been tailing, they are nearly impossible to see unless the sun is out. When sight fishing, good visibility is extremely important. Despite the sometime challenging conditions, we caught fish every day.
