I have found that the seat belt shoulder protectors you can buy in poundshops in packs of 2 are ideal to put round a rod as they give a lot better protection for the important tip eyes of the rod. they are normally about 6 - 8 inches long, padded & velcro fastening. to me a lot more safer than the standard ...
